Venture Development MSc International Management and Entrepreneurship Year 1
Work in teams of three to start up a new company selling computers.
Analyse the context e.g. your USP, your people, your place in the market, your profit, your potential.
This activity requires planning in advance of any trading, discussion with your team away from the computer, and trading analysis.
The impact is significant as students learn about the different facets of running a business through experiential learning. By writing a report on what they had learned about venture development as a result of engaging with the software this highlighted the key learning points throughout the learning experience; including cross referencing to key learning points from the core text for the module (Burns, 2018). As a result, my students became finalists in the International Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2019 winning team gold and individual gold medals; and one of the team also won Most Entrepreneurial Student; and I was awarded Outstanding Teacher Award 2019. The competition was convened at LSBU and the awards were presented at the Institute of Directors. Middlesex University was the top UK team. Eleven teams from China also participated showing the diversity in use of the simulation; and 75 million people in China watched the preliminary rounds on TV. The students learned how to run a successful business, how to recover from crises, how to pitch their results and learning, and how to cooperate internationally and cross culturally. The case study was also a finalist in the international Innovation and Entrepreneurship Teaching Excellence Awards 2014; and as a result, Chris Moon was invited to become lead judge of the awards. He has acted in this capacity now since 2015, reviewing scores of entries from across the globe, co-judging the finalist presentations, summarising the competition to the plenary audience of enterprise and entrepreneurship educators, and assisting with the presentation of awards. The images of the awards ceremony and details of the judging have been seen in various press across the globe.
