  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of the steps involved in setting up and growing a viable business venture

Venture Development    MSc International Management and Entrepreneurship       Year 1

Introduction:

The software (Sim Venture Classic) simulates a business selling computers from start up through growth and development. The simulation allows students to learn from their mistakes, reflect on their practices, analysis business risk, forecast financial scenarios, take management decisions, and receive real time feedback on their trading activities. The software is Business Educational Technology award winning and used by leading HEIs across the globe. SV Ltd provides two variants of the software; SV Classic is available by license agreement for use on an agreed number of desktops; and SV Evolution is now available as a web-based version of the same software allowing access from remote locations. Payment of the software license includes tutor training and technical support; and tutors can also attend additional CPD accredited training courses to develop their expertise (contact SV for prices).

Activity:

Work in teams of three to start up a new company selling computers.

Analyse the context e.g. your USP, your people, your place in the market, your profit, your potential.

  1. Conduct research to understand the above e.g. market research, competitor research, product research, etc.
  2. Evaluate the risks; make financial forecasts of your proposed decisions; study the consequences of your actions on the business.
  3. Review and reflect after each trading period to ascertain what worked well and what could have been done differently.

This activity requires planning in advance of any trading, discussion with your team away from the computer, and trading analysis.

Impact:

The impact is significant as students learn about the different facets of running a business through experiential learning. By writing a report on what they had learned about venture development as a result of engaging with the software this highlighted the key learning points throughout the learning experience; including cross referencing to key learning points from the core text for the module (Burns, 2018). As a result, my students became finalists in the International Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2019 winning team gold and individual gold medals; and one of the team also won Most Entrepreneurial Student; and I was awarded Outstanding Teacher Award 2019. The competition was convened at LSBU and the awards were presented at the Institute of Directors. Middlesex University was the top UK team. Eleven teams from China also participated showing the diversity in use of the simulation; and 75 million people in China watched the preliminary rounds on TV. The students learned how to run a successful business, how to recover from crises, how to pitch their results and learning, and how to cooperate internationally and cross culturally. The case study was also a finalist in the international Innovation and Entrepreneurship Teaching Excellence Awards 2014; and as a result, Chris Moon was invited to become lead judge of the awards. He has acted in this capacity now since 2015, reviewing scores of entries from across the globe, co-judging the finalist presentations, summarising the competition to the plenary audience of enterprise and entrepreneurship educators, and assisting with the presentation of awards. The images of the awards ceremony and details of the judging have been seen in various press across the globe.

Resources:

  • Sim Venture (2019) provide an on-line resource centre including video clips to familiarise students with the software; also available on Youtube.
  • Large AV display screen is useful to demo the software to the students during the first few sessions.
  • Ask the students to save their notepad entries (which are collected automatically by the software) on a memory stick to review periodically.
  • Start with the ‘driving lesson’ scenario so that the randomisation function is switched off. This allows the students to become familiar with the company before the activities are selected to be ‘fiendishly difficult’.
